Aluminum vs Steel Frame Pet Strollers
Why the frame matters more than the fabric
Ask any pet stroller factory what drives the quote and the answer is almost always the same: the frame. Fabric, wheels and accessories are easy to swap between models, but the frame determines three numbers every buyer cares about — unit weight, load capacity, and cost per carton.
A lighter frame means lower air-freight cost and a better unboxing experience for the end customer. A heavier one usually means a lower FOB price and a more rigid structure. Neither is "better" — they serve different retail channels.
Aluminum frame: the mainstream choice
Aluminum tube frames dominate the mid-to-high segment of the pet stroller market. Typical wall thickness ranges from 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm depending on load rating. The advantages are straightforward:
- Weight — an aluminum single stroller typically comes in 20-30% lighter than an equivalent steel model.
- Corrosion resistance — important for buyers selling into coastal or high-humidity markets.
- Perceived value — the matte anodised finish reads as premium on a retail shelf.
The trade-off is cost and repairability. Aluminum tube is more expensive per kilogram than cold-rolled steel, and a bent aluminum section usually has to be replaced rather than straightened.
Steel frame: still the value champion
Cold-rolled steel remains the right answer for entry-level and promotional programs, particularly where the retail price point is the deciding factor. Steel frames carry higher load ratings for a given tube diameter, which is why you still see them on large-dog and twin models rated above 30 kg.
- Lowest material cost per unit — meaningful at 5,000-piece volumes.
- Higher load capacity for the same tube gauge.
- Easier local repair in markets without a spare-parts program.
The obvious downside is weight. A steel twin stroller can easily weigh 30% more than its aluminum equivalent, which shows up directly in freight cost and in customer reviews.
Fabric and wheels: where the rest of the cost sits
Most mid-range models use 600D polyester (Oxford) with a water-resistant coating. Entry-level programs may drop to 300D to hit a price point, while premium models move to 1680D or a canvas blend. On wheels, EVA foam wheels are quiet and cheap but wear quickly on rough pavement; rubber or PU wheels cost more and last considerably longer.
When comparing quotes, always confirm whether the fabric denier, wheel material and bearing type are specified in writing. Two quotes that look identical on frame material can differ by several dollars once these items are included.
Which one should you specify?
A simple rule of thumb used by many importers: aluminum for anything positioned above the mid-market tier or sold primarily online (where shipping weight is visible in the spec sheet), steel for promotional programs, large-dog models above 30 kg, and price-driven retail channels.
