How to Choose a Cat Stroller

Most cats are not walkers. A stroller lets you take a nervous, senior or recovering cat outdoors without the stress — or the escape risk — of a leash. But cat strollers are not just small dog strollers with a different label. Cats climb, claw and bolt, so the details matter. This guide walks through what to check, whether you are buying one cat pram for home or sourcing a cat-stroller line for your brand.

1. Start with your cat's weight

Load rating is the first filter. Single-cabin cat strollers typically carry 5–15 kg — enough for one average cat. Large and double-deck models reach 25–40 kg and suit big breeds or two cats sharing a cabin. Always size for the cat's resting weight plus a little headroom; a cabin run at its limit feels unstable and folds the suspension flat.

2. Cabin type: which shape fits the trip

• Foldable cabin — the everyday choice for vet visits and short neighbourhood walks; collapses small for the car boot.
• Detachable carrier — the cabin unclips from the wheeled base and becomes a handheld carrier for trains, taxis and clinics.
• Double-decker — two stacked cabins for multi-cat homes or a cat plus a small dog.
• Bassinet — a flat cabin for kittens or senior cats that cannot sit upright for long.

3. Escape-proof mesh is non-negotiable

Cats squeeze through gaps a dog would ignore. Look for fine, claw-proof mesh on at least three sides, a zippered top that cannot be pushed open from inside, and an internal tether clip that attaches to a harness. The clip keeps the cat contained the moment the cabin opens — that one detail is the difference between a cat stroller and a cat-launching device. 4. Wheels and brake

A foot brake is essential — engage it every time you stop, especially on any slope. For pavements and shops, 360° swivel front wheels make one-handed steering easy. For parks, trails or longer outings, choose shock-absorbing wheels so the ride stays calm and the cat stays put. Jogger frames add suspension for owners who want to run with a calm cat.

5. Ventilation and a calm cabin

Cats overheat faster than they cool, so airflow matters more than it does for a dog. Pick a cabin with mesh on multiple sides and a darker, calmer interior option for stress-prone cats. A reversible handle lets a nervous cat ride parent-facing, close to its owner.

6. Fold size and storage

Check the folded dimension, not just the open size. One-button fold models collapse to roughly 30–40 cm thick and slide behind a car seat; heavier double or large frames fold larger and need a boot with room. If the stroller lives in a flat, a small fold is the difference between "always with us" and "shoved in a closet".

7. Fabric and cleaning

Cats shed and occasionally travel badly. A removable, washable pad and a water-resistant base save the cabin after damp grass or a hairball. Check that the pad zips out and the fabric tolerates a gentle cycle.
